Medicines, in particular, come with so many warnings these days that it can make you wonder how to tell if what you're being given is the right thing. With that in mind, we're providing some important information on an over-the-counter medicine and a prescription pain killer below, in addition to the side effects of each:

Opioids Opioids can drastically decrease the number of pain messages being sent from the body to the brain, and then calm the brain's reaction to them – this, in turn, helps a patient deal better with the pain emotionally. Opioids are either refined from the opium poppy plant, or have been artificially created to work in the same way. The most well-known form of opioid is morphine, which is most commonly used to treat very severe pain.
  • What are the cons?Opioids do not fix the source of the pain; they only manage the symptoms. There is no ceiling dose at which opioids stop working. Users can become tolerant and require more of the substance for the same effect (this can lead to extraordinary consumption as tolerance builds and relief becomes harder to obtain).

Over the Counter

Acetylsalicylic Acid Commonly referred to as "aspirin," this drug has been used for centuries to treat both pain and inflammation. Aspirin also interferes with blood-clotting thromboxanes, and some people take a daily dose to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. Aspirin's particular anti-inflammatory properties can be used for all types of pain, such as joint pain, arthritis, toothaches, headaches, etc. The drug works for other types of pain, too, including muscle pain, joint pain from arthritis, and toothaches. Aspirin is also incredibly cheap. Unlike opioids, aspirin addresses the source of the pain, as well, by suppressing the production of hormone-like molecules that play an important role in inflammation.
  • What are the cons? The same molecules that cause the inflammation mentioned above also protect the lining of your stomach. This means that consistent use of aspirin can lead to serious stomach issues, such as bleeding. Thus, people with ulcers, bleeding disorders or kidney or liver problems should try to stay away from it or find alternatives.
