Information Dissection: What is Gastric Bypass and Lap Band Surgery?
To help with weight loss, many overweight people elect to have weight
loss surgery. This type of surgery, also
known as bariatric surgery, includes a
variety of different procedures. Each
procedure is intended for different people with different circumstances. For instance, gastric bypass surgery may be
good for one person and not for another.
The same goes for lap band surgery and other weight loss surgical
procedures.
After meeting with a primary care physician and surgeon, you discover
which type of surgery is best for you.
Doctors look at different factors including present health, past health,
genetics and body type. To help you
understand each procedure, we're going to define each briefly.
Gastric Bypass Surgery
This is when the stomach is partitioned, or divided, and the small
intestine is rerouted and shortened to complement the stomach's new
character. This is the most effective
and long-term solution to morbid obesity and is incredibly popular in the
United States. Due to the smaller
stomach size, patients become less hungry and fuller faster. They're physically unable to eat as much as
before the surgery because their stomach is smaller.
There are different forms of gastric bypass surgery, but they all have
the same mission: make the part of the stomach that processes food smaller and
reroute/shorten the small intestine appropriately. The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RNY) is one of
the most popular forms.
Lap Band Surgery
Unlike gastric bypass surgery, the small intestine doesn't play a part in
the procedure. In fact, all parts of the
stomach are left in their original form.
Instead of dividing the stomach into a small section to reduce hunger
and food consumption, an inflatable silicone band is attached laparoscopically
(with small incisions and instruments) around the top section of the
stomach. Although it resembles a small
metal clamp in the picture below, it's actually much gentler than that.
By loosening and tightening the band, your surgeon can control how
restrictive the band is and how hungry you get.
