Our General Surgeons in Oklahoma City Specialize in Abdominal Procedures

General surgery typically focuses on the abdominal organs, including the stomach, large and small intestines, appendix and gallbladder, and our highly specialized team of general surgeons in Oklahoma City are familiar with a wide spectrum of diseases that may require surgical treatment. As a result, they are able to diagnose and suggest treatments for many different conditions.

When you're at Summit Medical Center, you're in good hands. In practice, our general surgeons must first obtain initial certification in general surgery. The anatomical areas covered in this initial certification include the abdomen and its contents, the alimentary tract with emphasis on bariatric surgery, breast, skin and soft tissue, endocrine system, pediatric surgery, surgical critical care and oncology, vascular surgery, burns, trauma, and emergency care.

The American Board of Surgery also requires general surgeons in Oklahoma City to have knowledge of epidemiology, anatomy, physiology, and pathology, along with infection and antibiotic usage, wound healing, fluid management, metabolism, nutrition, and management of postoperative pain. Patients can also expect our surgeons to have experience in pre- and post-operative care, management of complications, and the ability to interpret various types of diagnostic imaging.

Although general surgeons are required to have knowledge of all types of abdominal issues, several concentrations require further study for surgeons to become specialists in certain areas. These include bariatric, pediatric, thoracic, and vascular surgeries, along with organ transplantation. Additionally, general surgeons should be able to make early diagnosis and referrals for problems involving gynecology, urology, orthopedic, and hand issues. We are proud to say that our surgeons are all highly qualified in these areas.

Our surgeons also have the skills and knowledge necessary to care for terminally ill patients, including pain management, mitigation of weight loss and palliative care; weight-loss surgery, care, and counseling for morbidly obese patients and their families; management of chronic diseases in geriatric patients, and dealing with culturally diverse groups of people.
